[edit] Collection Summary
The Spencer's resources are broadly divided into four categories: 1) the Kansas Collection (sources dealing with Kansas and contiguous states), 2) University Archives (sources related to the history of the University of Kansas), 3) the Wilcox Collection (sources--mostly from the twentieth century--that deal with radical political and social movements), and 4) Special Collections (everything else, including a strong collection of Irish literature).
[edit] Usage Discussion
Suggestions for approaching the material:
Housing and getting by for less in the area: The Spencer Research Library is located on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence. There are no hotels within walking distance. As far as restaurants, if you go across Jayhawk Boulevard to Wescoe Hall there is a cafeteria on the first floor that has a salad and soup bar, a sandwich shop, Asian food, Pizza Hut, Chick-Fil-A, and a coffee shop. This is extremely busy at lunch time during the school year. If you take Jayhawk Boulevard down to the Kansas Union (not to be confused with the Burge Union), there is a nicer restaurant and another food-court style cafeteria that tend to be slightly less crowded. If you venture off campus for lunch, there are a number of delicious local restaurants, many of which are located on Massachusetts Street. Popular "Mass Street" restaurants include Zen Zero (Asian and vegetarian), Papa Keno's (pizza), La Parilla (Latin American), and Jefferson's (burgers/American). There is an excellent sandwich shop on Vermont Street (one street west of Massachusetts) called Wheatfields. If you are looking for coffee and free wi-fi, there are a number of popular cafes on Mass Street, including La Prima Tazza, Global Cafe, Starbucks, Z's, and Signs of Life.
