The Newberry Library is a privately funded independent research library located on the near north side of Chicago. With more than 1,500,000 volumes, 5,000,000 manuscript pages, and 300,000 historic maps, it has a strong general collection embracing history and the humanities within Western civilization from the late Middle Ages to the early 20th century. Bibliographic holdings are extensive, and certain special collections are internationally noted. Such collections include material on the following subjects: American history and literature; the European discovery, exploration, and settlement of the New World; American Indian histories and cultures; the American West; local history, genealogy, censuses, and literature of the Midwest (particularly the Chicago Renaissance); European history and literature; the Renaissance; Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian history; the history of cartography; the history and theory of music; the history of printing; and early philology and linguistics.
