[edit] Collection Summary
The German Historical Institute (GHI) was established in April 1987 as an independent nonprofit foundation dedicated to the promotion of historical research and to the dissemination of historical knowledge. Since 2002 it has been part of the Stiftung Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (DGIA). The institute receives funding from the government of the Federal Republic of Germany but also seeks grants and accepts support from other sources. The GHI has established a research library that includes a reference section; finding aids of German and American archives; a collection of periodicals, focusing especially on German Americana, German regional and local history, and recent publications on German and American history, with emphasis on German-American relations.
The GHI provides a permanent basis for historical research on Germany and the United States and lends support and advice to German and American scholars. It advances the cooperation between German and American historians and political scientists by promoting, in particular, trans-Atlantic history and comparisons; studies in American history and German-American relations in political, social, economic, and cultural context; research on international relations, with emphasis on the roles of the United States and Germany; environmental history; collection of source material from American archives and libraries; and organization of conferences and lecture series.
