The East Texas Research Center (ETRC) collects, preserves, and provides physical and virtual access to archival materials relating to East Texas. The ETRC houses photographs, manuscripts, documents, maps, books, and other archival materials, including over five hundred oral histories, that emphasize eastern Texas life, culture, economy, and history. In 1959, the Forest History Foundation designated the ETRC an official North American Forest History Repository. The ETRC also serves a Regional Historical Resource Depository for the State of Texas and houses inactive records for eight East Texas counties. Access to these important documents is facilitated through on-line finding aids and select digital copies, or by visiting the ETRC Reading Room, which is open six days a week.

[edit] Access

All ETRC collections are available to anyone interested in using the material. The collections are non-circulating and must be used on site in the reading room. However, over 11,000 items have been digitized and are accessible through TIDES.

[edit] Permitted and prohibited items

  • Permitted: Pencils, laptop, notepad or loose leaf paper, camera, and phone.
  • Prohibited: Food and drinks, pens, scanner, and bag or purse. The front desk employee will assist with storage of personal items.

[edit] Requesting copies

If you are requesting information from a specific personal collection please provide the name of the collection, box, and folder number in which the material is located. For genealogy research, please provide as much information as possible about the person in question. Researchers are asked to limit requests to two names at a time.
The ETRC reserves the right to decline filling requests if volume makes it prohibitive. Requests will be filled as staff time becomes available. Requests are filled in the order they are received; however, more complicated requests will take more time to fill. We will contact you if we can not honor your request.
Photocopy cost is $.25 per paper page and $.50 per microfilm page with a minimum charge of $1.00 (currently our copying policy is under revision). There is a $5.00 charge per scan for items which require scanning. Unless an expenditure limit is set in advance by the researcher, authorization to produce photocopies will be requested for billings that exceed $5.00.
To submit requests, please email asketrc@sfasu.edu.
